Riots at Freshers Party

Many areas of the Shrewsbury 6th Form Freshers party resembled the fracture clinic at
the hospital; it was unclear if the inability to walk normally was the result of 10 apple sours on the way to the Severn Cellars or the crippling high heels most of the 6th form females were wearing.

If you were to rate the Cellars as a venue for loud bands on the basis of history, setting, sound, character, comfort, atmosphere, view, vibrancy and uniqueness, the cellars would not come top for sound or view of the band. The video camera microphone gave up during White Riot, then the bass amp speaker blew up in the second half. But the need for 3 members of security to hold back the barriers following the first song tells its own story.

If youve got any photos of the crowd or the performance or the riot please send them to radioriots@googlemail.com

Bagandan Radio Riots

More than a year has passed since the government-influenced Broadcasting Council summarily closed the popular Central Broadcasting Service, or CBS. The council closed the station in September 2009 as riots were erupting in response to the government's decision to block the traditional Baganda king from attending a youth celebration north of the capital, Kampala. Its continued closure bodes ill for independent news coverage of February's presidential election.

"They just broke in and took the transmitter," former CBS news editor Ndiwalana Kiwanuka told me. "We had only covered about two hours of the riots before we were closed." Kiwanuka believes the riots were a pretext to close the station.

Radio Riots Fuse Telford;Where are You, and I'm so Sorry...

The lights went out all over Telford as Radio Riots played the Randlay Farm Pub. But this did not stop the show. Ollie, Ewan and Harry moved to sit at front of stage, acoustic guitar at the ready with Joel on drums to play and sing some tunes never heard before on a Radio Riots stage;A heartfelt version of Blink 182 "I miss You" plus an acoustic version of "Mr Brightside" and a beautiful rendition of "I fought the law"- not a dry eye in the house. Almost sad see see the lights flicker back on. So enjoyable was the blackout sing song the boys were asked to play on for another half hour, and offered cash for the privilege! Video footage is a little dark, but may appear on youtube channel soon.

Chow Mein Abandoned for Radio Riots Shocker

The flag of St George was out in force last Friday 23 April for the Radio Riots St Georges day gig at the Britannia, Castle Foregate. But that did not mean there would not be a warm welcome for every nationality who turned up; It was reported that one of our German cousins had been having a Chinese meal in a nearby restaurant and had been listening to the band playing down the road while pretending to be interested in the conversation of her eating partner.Having sat through Going Out Tonight wondering who did the original she had been forced to leave the Chow Mein and make a dash for the Britannia to join in. Sightings of Welsh and Scots brothers and sisters were also reported as well as someone with a dash of Portuguese. All are welcome.

An Audience With Radio Riots

A select group of fans were chosen to watch the band perform at this intimate venue venue on Abbey Foregate. The band played their full set list as if playing at the NIA, letting off steam at the end of a strange old week. More footage of the gig is available on the Radio riots channel on Your Tube. Sound not so good but you might catch the atmosphere.

Top Cats; Radio Riots do Clubfoot

I have questioned the band about what exactly was being chanted before they launched into Clubfoot, and am always pleased to learn new words for things I never knew needed naming. In this public forum I do not think an explanation is appropriate but if anyone who was there wishes to explain in the comments section, please feel free.

Radio Riots In Uganda, Read All About It!

Uganda’s NRM government is now blaming Baganda musicians for composing popular songs which forced it to close the Buganda kingdom radio stations, CBS FM. Last week a Uganda government committee on the closure of CBS FM Radio announced its evidence that CBS FM broadcast dangerous materials in September last year and causes the Kayunga riots. According to the Uganda government owned Luganda newspaper, Bukedde, that evidence includes popular Baganda songs. As part of the evidence the Uganda government blames CBS FM Radio for playing these songs so frequently that when the NRM blocked Kabaka Mutebi from going to Kayunga on October 10,2009, these dangerous songs gave thousands of youths ideas to riot.

A spokesman for Radio Riots said "it had nothing to do with us"

Kasabian Drummer Checks out Radio Riots

Kasabian drummer, Ian Matthews was watching Radio Riots at their gig in the Anchor Pub, Frankwell last night. Any attempt to remain undercover was out of the window before he'd even got through the door, having been spotted by the only Kasabian T shirt wearing Riots fan in the pub. Doubt had spread round the mosh area, but was quickly dispelled when Ian joined the Radio Riots and fans outside during the break.

Ian had fallen and broken his hand while on tour with Kasabian in Milan. He had taken the opportunity to have a night out in rocking Shrewsbury, checking out Radio Riots as possible support for the future.

Congratulations were offered for the Kasabian win at the Brits. Shockingly, Ian and the band had not been put out by the close proximity of the JLS table at Earls Court, who he believed to be hard working lads who fulfilled a particular role in the rich tapestry of British Music. An open minded, eclectic approach to music was advocated. But we still prefer Kasabian...Cant see the Riots covering "Beat Again" any time soon.

All in all another good night for Radio Riots.

Sunday 14 February 2010

Who Needs Wembley Stadium, The O2 Arena or the NIA

Radio Riots do not need Wembley Stadium and 60,000 fans for a good gig. The intimate atmosphere at The Swan in Frankwell Shrewsbury brought out the best in everyone; locals, fans and bar staff all had a good night, though the microphone on the camera was under pressure.

The Beatles, The Clash, The Jam, Radio Riots

The recent Radio Riots gig at The Britannia Pub, Castle Foregate brought many firsts for the band.2 Bouncers, a little bit of crowd trouble, groupies, autograph humters, and a cracking tribute from the landlord, who has seen a few bands in his time.

A spokesman for the band said "Many thanks to Porky and Sharon for their support"

Cigarette Smoke Stripper Ejection Shocker At The Britannia

The band were going through the motions of playing one of the first songs they ever played together, Cigarette Smoke by the Arctic Monkeys, then found that for a few short moments they had not been the focus of attention as their audience had been 'watching a stripper' All you can see is a bit of toing and froing and negotiation, but the reactions in the background, her friends reaction, and the still composure of the band is alaugh.

Radio Riots frontman Ewan Griffiths later commented that "it had been a pleasure and a privilege"
